This privacy policy is designed to inform users of the Halal Scanner - HalalSpot application for iOS mobile devices about what personal information is collected, how it is used, and how it is protected.

Your privacy is important to us. It is our policy to respect your privacy regarding any information we may collect from you through our app, HalalSpot.

We only ask for personal information when we truly need it to provide a service to you. We collect it by fair and lawful means, with your knowledge and consent. We also let you know why we're collecting it and how it will be used.

We only retain collected information for as long as necessary to provide you with your requested service. What data we store, we'll protect within commercially acceptable means to prevent loss and theft, as well as unauthorized access, disclosure, copying, use or modification.

Product and Ingredient Data

HalalSpot allows you to scan product barcodes and ingredient labels to determine their halal status. Your scan history, saved products, favorites, analysis results, and any preferences you provide (such as your selected madhab/school of jurisprudence) are stored locally on your device and are not accessible to us.

When you request an AI-powered ingredient analysis or use the AI Halal Expert chat feature, your product photo and related data are sent to Google Gemini AI for processing, as described in the "Use of Third-Party AI Services" section below.

Camera and Photo Library Access

HalalSpot requests access to your device camera to scan product barcodes and capture ingredient label photos. Access to your photo library is requested to allow you to analyze existing product photos. When you request an analysis or use the AI chat feature, your photo is sent to Google Gemini AI for processing as described below.

Product Database Lookups

When you scan a product barcode, HalalSpot may query the OpenFoodFacts database to retrieve product information such as product name, brand, ingredient list, nutrition facts, and allergen data. OpenFoodFacts is an open, collaborative food products database. No personally identifying information is sent during these lookups — only the barcode number is transmitted.

Local Halal Analysis

HalalSpot includes built-in local databases for E-code additives, cosmetic ingredients, and halal keyword detection. When a product is analyzed using these local databases, no data is sent to any external service. The analysis is performed entirely on your device.

Use of Third-Party AI Services

HalalSpot uses Google's Gemini AI, a third-party artificial intelligence service provided by Google LLC (via Firebase Vertex AI), to power the AI Detailed Analysis feature and the AI Halal Expert chat.
